Question & answer
The check engine light just went on. Is it serious?
The check engine light can signal a wide variety of anomalies detected by your vehicle’s on-board computer. This light is not to be taken lightly. Indeed, it could be anything from a fuel cap not securely tightened to an irreversible engine disorder.
If the check engine light turns on while you are driving, the best thing to do is to consult a technician as soon as possible in order to get a diagnosis and solve the problem. However if the light starts blinking while you are driving, stop the car as soon as possible in a safe place and turn off the engine.
