How to report an impaired driver

You can encounter an impaired driver at any time of day. Here’s what to do if you notice someone falling asleep at the wheel or driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Don’t try to stop or warn the driver of their behaviour. Doing so could put you and other road users at risk.
  • Memorize as much information as possible, including the licence plate number and the make, model and colour of the vehicle. If possible, provide a description of the driver and the direction the vehicle is travelling. This will help the police respond more quickly. If you have passengers, ask them to help by taking pictures or videos and calling the police.
  • If you’re alone, pull over when it’s safe to do so, to report the incident. Call 911 if you’re on a municipal road or Sûreté du Québec if you’re on a highway or national road by dialling *4141.

Reporting a high-risk driver can help prevent a fatal accident.

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, and it all starts with regular vehicle maintenance. Contact your local Mister Muffler to make an appointment.
